Self Defence and Safety Awareness Workshop

  *The PG & Research Department of History under the Women’s Studies Centre and Women’s Studies Centre* *National Service Scheme (NSS) of Providence College for Women, Coonoor, organized a Self Defence and Safety Awareness Workshop for Women on 10 March 2026 at 10:30 a.m. in the MMT Hall.* The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among women students about personal safety, self‑confidence, and basic self‑defence techniques that can be used in emergency situations. The Resource Person, *Mr. Roshan Donald*, delivered an informative and practical session. Industrial Visit to Coimbatore Airport

  Industrial Visit to Coimbatore International Airport Students of the PG Diploma in Aviation Management from the PG and Research Department of History, Providence College for Women (Autonomous), Coonoor, organized an industrial visit to Coimbatore International Airport on 11 March 2026. The visit aimed to provide practical exposure to the students regarding airport operations and aviation management. During the visit, the students were introduced to various departments of the airport including passenger handling, security procedures, baggage management, and air traffic operations. Officials at the airport explained the functioning of different sections and the importance of coordination in maintaining smooth airport operations. State Level Webinar

       The PG & Research Department of History, Providence College for Women (Autonomous), Coonoor, in collaboration with Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai, successfully organized a State Level Webinar on 16th February 2026 through Google Meet. The webinar was conducted on the theme “The Impact of Pulwama Attack on India’s National Security: Lessons Learned and Way Forward.” The programme was held under the MoU initiative between the two institutions, aiming to create awareness and academic discussion on contemporary issues of national importance.

  The PG & Research Department of History of Providence College for Women organized a programme on the topic “Gender Equity: Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities” on 12 February 2026 .The programme aimed to create awareness among students about gender equality, equal rights, and opportunities for all. The resource person for the programme was Dr. J. Muthukumar, Associate Professor (on deputation from Annamalai University) and PG & Research Department of History, Rani Anna Government College for Women. He delivered an informative lecture on the importance of gender equity in education, workplace, and society. Atmanirbhar (Self-Reliance) -Free Tailoring Class

                 The Department of History organized an Aatmanirbhar (Self-Reliance) activity by conducting a free tailoring class for women of the local community at CSI Middle School. The programme was held on 04/02/2026 and 12/02/2026 to provide basic tailoring skills that support self-reliance and livelihood opportunities. Mrs. Swarna served as the resource person and trained the participants in stitching techniques, use of sewing machines, measurements, and basic garment making. Women from nearby areas actively participated and gained useful skills for self-employment. Faculty members and students of the Department of History coordinated the programme successfully. The participants expressed their gratitude for the free training. Overall, the programme was successful in promoting women’s empowerment, self-employment, and community engagement, and similar sessions will be continued in the future.

Veterinary Health Camp at Bellattimattam Village

                 The PG & Research Department of History and the PG & Research Department of Women (Autonomous), Coonoor, organized a Veterinary Health Camp at Bellattimattam Village under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and State Institute of Rural Development(SIRD). The camp aimed to promote animal health awareness among rural farmers and provide essential veterinary services for their livestock. Dr. S. Balamurugan ( B.V.Sc  & A.H., PGDAW), Veterinary Assistant Surgeon from the Veterinary Dispensary, Athigaratty, Nilgiris, served as the resource person and led the session. The Veterinary Health Camp was successfully conducted on 09/02/2026, with nearly 23 families actively participating by bringing their cattle for health check-ups and benefiting from the veterinary services provided.

Veterinary survey

                   A house-to-house survey was conducted on 04/02/2026 by Dr. Shani Rashin R., Dr. R. Revathi, Dr. Danish Fathima R., Dr. S. Baby, Ms. Swathi, and students to collect data on the various types of cattle owned by the villagers. This survey helped assess livestock distribution, identify common health issues, and understand the need for veterinary support in the area. 

Grama Sabha Meeting held at Yedapalli on 26/01/2026

                 The Department of History and the Department of Commerce attended the Grama Sabha meeting held at Yedapalli on 26/01/2026. The meeting was organised to discuss local developmental activities, public welfare schemes, and issues related to the village. Faculty member and students actively participated in the meeting and interacted with village officials and the public. Important topics such as sanitation, education, women welfare, social awareness, and government schemes were discussed. The members of the departments gained valuable insights into rural administration and grassroots democracy. The participation in the Grama Sabha meeting helped students to understand the practical functioning of local self-government and enhanced their social responsibility and civic awareness. 

Extension on 26th January –CSI Middle School

The students of III BA History delivered a Speech and Performed a Dance on the theme of Republic Day and Dr.Sudha and Rev.J. Jeramiah Alfred delivered a speech on the theme Constitution of India.

            The PG & Research Department of History, in collaboration with Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous, Bengaluru, organized a webinar in observance of Constitution Day on December 3, 2025. The topic of the webinar was “Women Empowerment: A Legal Perspective.”The Resource person was V.S Balamurugan Sub-Judge SecretaryDistrict Legal services Authority,Nilgiris.He  explained women’s rights from a legal perspective, focusing on constitutional guarantees of equality, statutory protections against discrimination, and international commitments. Constitution Day on 26/11/2025

                 The PG & Research Department of History and the NSS Unit of Providence College for Women (Autonomous), Coonoor, The Nilgiris, organized a webinar in observance of Constitution Day on 26/11/2025 Dr. A. Ravisankar, Assistant Professor of History, Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, delivered a lecture on “Features and Working of the Indian Constitution.” The programme began with the Welcome Address by Dr. Sudha N., and the Chief Guest was introduced by Dr. Saumya Raj S. R. Technical support was handled by Dr. Dhanish Fathima R., Dr. Revathi R., and Mrs. Shanthi M. The event was coordinated by NSS Programme Officers Dr. R. Shani Ruskin, Dr. C. Jeeva, Mrs. Salma, and Mrs. Saranya P., in the presence of the Sr. Secretary and Sister Principal.More than 100 students participated and benefited from the informative session, gaining valuable insights into constitutional values and responsibilities.

World Tourism Day

            On 27th September, World Tourism Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Coonoor Railway Station by the Department of History, Providence College for Women, Coonoor, The Nilgiris. The Department organized the event to promote the theme “Heritage Tourism” and to extend a warm welcome to visitors arriving in Coonoor. Tourists stepping off the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway were greeted with flowers and traditional hospitality. Staff and students from the Department of History provided them with information about the cultural and natural treasures of the Nilgiris, highlighting the World Tourism Day 2025 theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” The historic railway station itself, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, served as the perfect backdrop to emphasize the importance of preserving and celebrating our heritage.

Historica from 16th to 17th September 2025

              PG & Research Department of History organized Historica 2025-26 from 16 th to 17 th September 2025. Various Off Stage programs such as Wealth out of Waste, Cooking without flame, and Rangoli. On 20 th September 2025 Onstage programs like Solo singing, Group singing, Solo Dance, Group Dance, Fashion Parade all the staff members and students from the Department were attended and felicitated the programme. All the students showcase their talent in a well manner at the end of the programme students were honoured with awards and medals, received from the Secretary and the staff members.

Anti-Drug Awareness Walkathon

            As per Government instructions, Providence College for Women (Autonomous), Coonoor, has adopted five villages. Among them, Bellattimuttam was chosen where an awareness program was conducted for the villagers under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Anti-Drug Club, and National Service Scheme, along with the PG & Research Department of History and the PG & Research Department of Commerce. An Anti-Drug Awareness Walkathon was organized at Bellattimuttam in the presence of Ur Thalaivar Subramani. The program was arranged by Dr. Shani Ruskin, NSS Program Officer, and Mrs. R. Revathi, Dr.J.Gunaseeli  Co-ordinator of the Anti-Drug Committee, with Swathi taking the initiative to conduct the program along with the villagers. More than 50 people were made aware through this program. All the participants raised their voices through slogans. 

Trip to the TRC – Tribal Research Centre, Palada, Ooty on 19/08/2025

                   In  Commemoration of  World Indigenous Day  PG & Research Department of History, Providence College for Women (Autonomous) Organised a Field  Trip to the TRC – Tribal Research Centre, Palada, Ooty on 19/08/2025, The trip was attended by the all History students and IDC (Inter Disciplinary Course-Tourism and Perspectives ) students. Through this visit, the students gained knowledge about the tribal communities, their culture, traditional artefacts, handicrafts, and tools and visual representation of tribal life. A total of 34 students and 3 staff members participated in the trip. This field visit was highly beneficial to all students.

PG DIPLOMA IN AVIATION MANAGEMENT –ORIENTATION 07/08/2025

            The PG & Research Department of History organised an Orientation Program on Aviation on 07/08/2025 at 10.30am in the seminar Hall. The Event aimed to introduce students to the vast and dynamic field of Aviation and to highlight career opportunities available in the Industry. The resource person for the session was    Mr. Sathish Rajan, well known Aviation Trainer, who has served in the multiple capacities in the aviation sector. All the staff members from the History Department and all the students from I & II PG students attended and benefited from this program. The programme was highly beneficial and well received by the students.

FASHION DESIGNING COURSE

            The PG and Research Department of History, under the Women’s Studies Centre, has initiated a free Fashion Designing Course for all students of our college, with the aim of empowering women entrepreneurs through skill development. This course commenced on 2nd July 2025. The program was inaugurated by Sr.Secretary, K.C.Alponsa, along with Dr.Rev.Sr.Sheela V.J., Principal, Dr.Shani Ruskin R., Head of the Department, and Dr.Saumya Raj S.R., who delivered the welcome address. Faculty members from all departments actively participated in organizing and supporting this initiative. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Dhanish Fathima R. The course is conducted by expert trainer Ms. Rebekka, who is teaching essential tailoring and fashion design skills such as basic stitching, kerchief making, blouse designing, chudidar stitching, and traditional Aari embroidery work.     PG and The Research Department of History, Providence College for Women (Autonomous) Coonoor has planned for free TNPSC orientation class by the resource person Mr.Varadarajan, Trainer of Competitive Examinations on 1/7/2025.He gave a class on how to clear out General Tamil Paper and how to plan out and study for General Knowledge Questions, Time Management, Hard Work, Practises of Mock tests etc. Students those who are preparing for Competitive Exam classes attended and asked their doubts. There was interaction session between the students also. The session was very much useful for the students.
